Western Electric 274B in place of the 5U4G rectifier with some slight mods, EML 2A3 Mesh plate (but I did role with some rare smoked glass RCA monoplates that added a bit more warmth and bass to the HD800's, I jizzed my pants on some electronica and piano sonata tracks) and Svetlana 6N1P-Vi millspec driver tube. Being so transparent they reveal all the goodness of a DHT amp.
The HD800 have high impedance and mate very well with a tubed headamp.
Like many revealing speakers if you feed them glare it will sound nasty in a way less resolving gear just cant reveal.ĭont buy HD800 unless youve got vinyl or a great DAC and can afford a very good headphone amp. The main thing buying a used pair of HD800 is they sound good and look clean. headfi has threads on this with informed opinions mixed in with the usual rumours, sales pitches and nonsense. They have all proved over times to be just rumour. There have been many over the years including a few based on serial numbers. Heard that they were bass light, is that the case?ĭont believe the myths on the net about HD800's. I have an opportunity to buy a HD800 in low serial numbers, was wondering whether they are sonically inferior to the newer ones.
